Ortho Center Personal Training Program made the news!
February 08, 2010

Margaret McHugh with WSET 13 News reports:
Lynchburg, VA - Many of you may have made a new year’s resolution to get fit. And already you may be looking for some inspiration to stick with it. The Orthopaedic Center of Central Virginia is now offering personal training so if you’re finding it difficult to exercise because of a chronic condition or just don’t want to get injured they say they can help. Tom Currier of Forest is four weeks into improving his golf game.

Tom Currier - “Strengthening my core, and getting a little more balance.”

He didn’t have to go far for help. Currier has already been doing physical therapy for a degenerative disc disease at the Orthopaedic Center—now he’s working with a personal trainer.

Currier - “I think they’re looking out not only for one disc—I think they’re looking out for legs, body and core.”

Three months ago the center added the personal training program. The goal isn’t a better beach bod, but for people like Currier to build power through movement.

Michael Zealand, Personal Trainer - “We train the body the way it moves, we don’t try to break it up into muscle groups.”

They also focus on injury prevention and better overall health.

Zealand - “Not as many aches and pains, they don’t get hurt when lifting that suitcase going to the airport.”

And programs are available for people with chronic conditions, like Parkinson’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia.

Zealand - “We can tailor each program to that client’s needs or concerns that they have.”

So far Currier’s lower back pain has improved and his golf game has too.

Tom Currier - “I’m getting better as time goes on.”

Insurance doesn’t cover a personal training session—but it is about the same as a co-pay, at $25 for a half hour session.
