The Osteoporosis Center is a comprehensive center
for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporotic
bone disease, offering bone density screening,
patient education and treatment.
Since bone develops during childhood and reaches
peak density at about age 30, awareness of bone
health at an early age is imperative. Healthy
habits including exercise, maintaining a well-balanced
diet, adequate calcium and Vitamin D supplements,
all should start in childhood and continue throughout
adulthood. Osteoporosis is a silent disease until
fracture occurs. With the aging population, doctors
will see more patients with the disease; however,
it is not limited to the elderly. Osteoporosis
can strike at any age – from childhood through
early adulthood.
The Orthopaedic Center’s state-of-the-art
bone densitometer combines bone mineral density
measurement and vertebral fracture assessment.
This assesses the presence of vertebral fracture,
giving the physicians the information they need
to diagnose and treat patients quickly and accurately.
It also allows for evaluation of young people,
infants, children, and bone stability around total
hip implants; all new techniques not previously
available.
The Osteoporosis Center does not stop with diagnosis
and treatment of osteoporosis. Education of patients
and raising awareness in the community of this
preventable disease is a primary focus of the
center.
